399 C arolina In an election address in Carolina c1939, Dr DF Malan stated that ‘the poor white problem in South Africa cannot be solved unless the Jewish problem is solved first’. He was referring to the fact that some Afrikaans-speaking professors had alleged that the Jews were a hindrance to the economic development of the Afrikaners in the urban and economic environment. J ewish I nstitutions The only Jewish institution in Carolina mentioned in historical records is a branch of the Union of JewishWomen, active in 1974. S atellite T owns • Badplaas Originally known as Badplaats. 48 km east of Carolina, the town is known for its thermal sulphur springs, which were discovered in 1876. In 1893 the Transvaal Government proclaimed the springs state property and established the area as a health and holiday resort. Badplaas was proclaimed a township in 1947. • Chrissiesmeer Also known as Lake Chrissie, this is a small settlement on the shores of a natural pan that lies 24 km east of Breyten and 32 km north-east of Ermelo.Alexander McKorkindale, the founder of the New Scotland settlement, named it after Christina Pretorius, the daughter of MarthinusWessel Pretorius, the first president of the Transvaal Republic and the founder of Pretoria.
